Job Title: Business Development Manager
Reporting To: Sales Director (HB&W UK)
Location: Berry Global Beccles, London Road, Beccles, Suffolk, NR34 8TS

 

Job Purpose

The Business Development Manager is responsible for driving profitable growth across an allocated portfolio of UK customers by developing strong, long-term customer relationships and identifying new business opportunities.

The role focuses on maximising revenue, margin, and customer satisfaction through a proactive, coordinated account management approach. This includes managing all aspects of customer engagement such as projects, innovation, marketing activity, new product development (NPD), and ongoing commercial performance.

Strong communication is essential, both internally and externally, to ensure customer needs are clearly understood and effectively delivered across the business. The role covers the sale of all relevant Berry Global plant products to allocated UK customers.

Key Responsibilities

Customer & Account Management:

  • Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with key customer stakeholders.

  • Act as the primary commercial contact for allocated accounts, ensuring a high level of customer intimacy and satisfaction.

  • Manage customer expectations professionally and proactively.

  • Obtain and manage detailed customer project briefs, delivering appropriate technical and commercial solutions.

Business Development & Growth:

  • Identify, analyse, and develop new business opportunities within the customer portfolio and wider region.

  • Drive sales growth and profitability in line with organisational objectives.

  • Develop and implement sales and market strategies in collaboration with product and sales teams.

  • Monitor competitor activity and assess impacts on pricing, positioning, and strategy.

Internal Coordination & Performance:

  • Coordinate internal teams to ensure customer KPIs are met across quality, commercial performance, and OTIF (On Time In Full).

  • Maintain full visibility of project pipelines, innovation activity, and NPD across accounts.

  • Lead internal meetings and communications to align key stakeholders on customer requirements.

  • Provide technical and commercial feedback to support continuous improvement.

Planning, Reporting & Systems:

  • Prepare and present market plans, forecasts, budgets, and business cases as required.

  • Provide accurate information relating to turnover, timescales, and capital expenditure requirements.

  • Maintain and manage CRM data to track opportunities, analyse pipeline performance, and coordinate activity across the wider Berry team.

  • Document communication plans, processes, and performance reports for senior management.

Market & Industry Knowledge:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of products, services, and new technologies.

  • Participate in relevant professional meetings and industry events.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience managing B2B customer accounts and driving account growth.

  • Strong ability to sell concepts, solutions, and ideas to a broad range of stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong commercial acumen with sound financial awareness.

  • Strategic thinking with the ability to plan and execute effectively.

  • Demonstrated project management capability.

  • Ability to build long-term customer relationships based on trust and credibility.

  • Experience managing account performance through cross-functional teams.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Highly organised, accurate, and professional in approach.

  • Pragmatic and objective, with the ability to balance commercial and operational realities.

  • Strong cultural awareness and empathy when working with diverse teams and customers.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience within plastic packaging manufacturing across multiple processes.

  • Background in related sectors such as Personal Care, Home Care, or Health Care.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Degree in Business, Commercial Studies, or a related discipline.

Working Requirements

  • Flexibility in working hours to meet customer and business needs.

  • Regular travel within the UK, with occasional overseas travel.

  • Overnight stays will be required, sometimes at short notice.
